South Korea's democratic system is susceptible to populist impulses. However, it is more stable than what one might expect.
The country is seeking a new paradigm of development. The Confucian culture, which emphasizes respect for the ancestors as well as gendered family relationships, continues to be influential in the society. There are signs that a secular culture is beginning to emerge.
Origins
In prehistoric times, the ancestors to modern Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild food. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet and beans as well as other crops. They also raised livestock and even made furs. These people formed tribal states one after another in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also created an industry of metallurgy, which produced iron tools and bronze. They also traded with other countries and introduced block and celadon printing to Japan along with art styles, a written language, and papermaking.
Gojoseon was established in 2333 BCE on the southern peninsula. This state embraced Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture including Confucian philosophy. During this period the people of Buyeo joined Gojoseon. Gojoseon was a hierarchical state where the monarch and senior officials came from the aristocracy of the land, whereas the rest of its population were peasants. The state collected taxes from these citizens and sometimes required them to fight in the army or work on projects of the government, like building fortifications.
Onjo the prince of Goguryeo who was also the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo, founded the state of Baekje at the close of the period. The new kingdom grew into the southwest of the peninsula, and was at war against the Goguryeo commanderies and China's in the region. Baekje incorporated aspects of Confucian beliefs into its official beliefs and made the male centered filiopiety concept an official doctrine in 1390 CE. Under the cover of filiopiety fathers were responsible to their families. They were expected to be obeyed by all and respected by their children and grandchildren.
Goryeo, a country that ruled from 918 until 1392 CE, gave the world the Hangul Alphabet based on the shapes that were created by the mouth when it pronounces. This greatly improved communication and led to an increase in the writing of Buddhist text. Additionally, movable metal type printing was introduced, and woodblock printing was improved. It was during this period that the Samguk sagi or 'History of the Three Kingdoms' first appeared in 1145 CE.
The evolution of Korea
The Korean peninsula was inhabited from Neolithic times until. Early evidence of human settlements can be seen in the form cist graves lined with stone, with valuable items like amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures, known as dolmens, and made of large stones in a single piece, are common in the country.
In the first half of the 1st millennium BCE, Gojoseon established itself as the first recognisable political state. After that, the peninsula was ruled by a variety of states in the Three Kingdoms period (57 BCbetween 635 and 57 BC CE) including Baekje Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. Additionally, the northern part of the peninsula was occupied by the Balhae kingdom, which the majority of historians don't consider to be a proper Korean state.
Following the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged during the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). In all of them, Baekje was the most powerful of them all but its dynasty dissolved by the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE and left Baekje with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region surrounding the Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy flourished for a short time.
The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to work together to expand their territories. In the end, Silla, with significant Chinese assistance, defeated all other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.
As Korea enters the post-crisis period its development model appears to be changing. People who are shocked by the huge cost of the old system are urging a thorough program of liberalization of capital, labor, and product markets. On the other hand the supporters of the old system try to preserve it through nationalist sentiments and by stoking fears of job losses.
Academics and analysts are divided about the extent to which Korea's development is influenced by these two trends. This article focuses on the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development including illiberal democracies (1945-60) democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also highlights the most important factors that are the driving force behind these developments.
Creationism in Korea
In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that nearly one third of respondents do not believe in evolution. Of 에볼루션코리아 , 41% believed there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory; 39% believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs. 17% said they did not comprehend it. This level of disbelief is comparable to that of the United States where a similar number do not believe that humans evolved from earlier species of life.
In the past, most of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on educating college students and in bringing them to Christ. In 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event was attended by an impressive crowd of professors, scientists, and church leaders.
The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The event was widely covered in national newspapers including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.
KACR started publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In it, the group published its own activities and published articles on the scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR as well as a few books on creationism that were published outside of Korea. KACR members lectured throughout the country at universities and churches.
A KACR success was observed at the KAIST University in Seoul. There, students were so fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised enough money and support to construct an on-campus museum showing creationist models of fossils and other exhibits.
In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly magazine called CREATION. The magazine covers subjects that pertain to the science of creation. It also sponsored a series lectures by ICR staff. It has also established local branches, which hold seminars and present talks to children in schools and other community groups.
The evolution of South Korea
In the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok, was replaced by miniskirts and other fashion elements from abroad. In the same way, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by modern jazz and rock and roll. In the period of this transition the famous samulnori, also known as the masked dance-dramas were very popular. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drummers as well as other musical instruments.
The economic crisis has formed Korea's new paradigm of development. The primary challenge facing the new regime is the balance between the state-led economic policies and market-oriented ones. It also involves changing incentives, monitoring or disciplining systems that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are addressed in Chapters 3 and 4.
The Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince of Goguryeo and the third son of Jumong, Baekje was established in the middle of the Hangang River, those from Buyeo and other areas, and people from northern China. Baekje, a major regional power in the early 4th Century, expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do south. As a result, it was in frequent confrontation with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanders along the border.
The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries led to the development of powerful local factions. Gungye an eminent noble from Later Baekje, established a kingdom with Songak as its capital. He also was in control of a portion of present-day Jeolla and Chungcheong provinces. Later, he relocated the capital to Wansanju. He was an adversary to Goguryeo.
His rule was however short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla, later incorporated Baekje into Goryeo without a fight as his successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the central government system. This marked the closing of the Three Kingdoms period. From that point on, the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms Period, Goguryeo Baekje Silla gradually grew into powerful states on the peninsula and in Manchuria.
